Contra costa K-12 Education policy

Every child deserves access to safe, high-quality schools regardless of income or background. Contra Costa County has large disparities in the quality of education among communities. We support policies that address these disparities by increasing access to high-resource school districts and distributing more resources to lower-performing school districts

Policy 1

Increase interdistrict transfers to high-performing school districts, especially those in high-cost, high-resource areas. Students in low-income households should not be priced out of the best school districts.

Policy 2

Merge all Contra Costa high school districts into a single district and all elementary and middle school districts into a single district. Force districts to spread resources equitably across schools on a per-student basis, providing a higher share of funding to schools with more high-need students. Redistribute some portion (maybe 30%) of a local parent or nonprofit donations to individual schools across the district as well.

Policy 3

Reduce dependence of school funding on local property taxes and increase redistribution of funds through the Local Control Funding Formula.

Additional Policies

  1. Provide free lunch for all students in households making below a certain income level. (this already happens just FYI)

  2. Providing access to high-quality pre-K education for all county residents.

  3. Provide funding for free or low-cost SAT and college prep courses to low-income students.

  4. De-policing campus; removing SROs and replacing them with mental health officers and other unarmed security staff.

  5. Increasing the counselor-to-student ratio.

  6. California has the lowest counselor-to-student ratio in the country.
